Check what the sound card selected is.
From my experience, if it thinks it is playing it will be but it may not be using the sound output you are looking for.
Control panel -> Sound -> playback and see if you see any sound indication.

We've just installed PIL and when we press play, it thinks it's playing but isn't.
Ideas?
